Avenue unveiled

A ceremony to dedicate the remade upper Pier Avenue will be 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 7 at Pier and Manhattan avenues. A 10-month overhaul of the iconic main drag includes wider sidewalks, an improved storm drain system and larger planted areas.

Green groundbreaking

The public is invited to a groundbreaking ceremony 8:45 a.m. Tuesday for the “Green Idea House” at 1556 Prospect Ave. It is expected to be the first net-zero energy, zero-carbon home in the South Bay.

More Thursdays!

Businesspeople along Pier Avenue and nearby streets have decided to keep the popular “First Thursdays” events going year-around. Shops and eateries have been staying open late and offering extra customer enticements on the first Thursday of each month during the lengthy overhaul of Pier Avenue, and the events’ popularity has prompted their continuation.

New meters

Motorists who park in two of the city’s lots will no longer have to find change for parking meters, thanks to a new system the city launches tomorrow, officials announced.

The new “pay by space meters” will be located in the city lot at 11th Street and Hermosa Avenue and in the parking structure at 13th Street and Hermosa Avenue.

Officials say the new meters will be more convenient and are expected to save the city up to $300,000.

The new meters offer a centralized place for payment and accept change and credit/debit cards, and soon will take payment by “cash keys” and via cell phone. Drivers can also receive text messages when their time is about to expire.

“Parking ambassadors” will be available through Oct. 10 to help motorists. ER
