Driver killed on wet Torrance Boulevard

A driver was killed Sunday morning at 2:46 a.m. when his vehicle, going east on Torrance Boulevard in Redondo Beach, hit a tree at the intersection of Irena Avenue.

Identified as a white male in his 30s from Westwood, the single-occupant driver of the 2007 5-class Mercedes lost control and went into a diagonal slide, according to Redondo Beach Sgt. Scot Martin. The car wrapped around the tree next to a retaining wall.

The suspected causes of the crash are speed, wet roads and “very bald tires,” Martin said.

“The speed may have only been 15 mph over the limit, but with the other factors, it might have been enough to add up,” Martin said.

Whether the driver was wearing a seatbelt has not been determined.

“It didn’t appear so. We haven’t confirmed that,” Martin said.

Passersby called the police. Through video from a nearby business later that morning, police determined a time of the accident.

Rolex stolen at gunpoint

A robbery of a Rolex watch at gunpoint on the International Boardwalk at the Redondo Pier led to a manhunt last Friday afternoon, March 18.

The suspect was thought to be last seen on a bicycle in the area of North Harbor Drive and Beryl Street.

“We never located him,” said Redondo Police Lt. Fabian Saucedo.

Officers contained the area for three hours, with help from the Hermosa Beach Police and Manhattan Beach police departments.

Police believe the victim may have been followed. The man was accosted near Quality Seafoods, after which he ran up to Kincaid’s Fish, Chops & Steaks to call 911.

Redondo Schools virus update: “zero cases,” more take-home test kits

Redondo schools Superintendent Steven Keller reported “zero cases” on the district’s Covid-19 dashboard at Tuesday’s school board meeting.

Since changing to masks-optional on campuses on March 12, Keller said mask wearing varies from classroom to classroom; some with a single-digit percentage of students and staff in masks, other rooms showing 40-50 percent.

“You do you, and we’re supporting that,” Keller said.

The official district policy went from masks “required” indoors to “strongly recommended.”

The district also received 10,000 more take-home COVID-19 test kids on Tuesday.

The District dashboard reported six Covid-19 cases Wednesday.
