Most months, South Bay Boardriders contest organizers are hoping the surf will be large enough to satisfy contestants. For the Saturday, January 7 contest, sponsored by Dive N’ Surf at Torrance Beach, organizers were hoping the surf would be small enough. On the day before the event, the surf was 20 feet.Fortunately the big swell faded to a manageable six-feet, softened by a high tide, at least during the early, qualifying heats.
Former Redondo High team rider Kade Kauffman scored his first podium finish of the winter, following a fifth place finish in the SBBC/Jack’s contest in December. Dane Acosta, who won the Jack’s contest, finished second and Cade Bruno was third.
In the women’s open Teagan Meza finished first, and sister London finished second, followed by Angelina Decesare.
Tegan Meza, who is just 10, finished third in the groms division, behind Kai Thomas and Robert Keese.
The next SB Boardriders contest will be sponsored by El Porto Surf Shop at 42nd Street, in El Porto. To register, visit SouthBayBoardriders.org. ER
