A plan is in motion to build an entry archway, or series of art placements, on Artesia Boulevard and at Riviera Village.
The city council voted Jan. 17 to begin a process to gather public input, and create a request for proposals from artists about what may be done. An archway would span Artesia, or the project could be smaller installations along the street, or in a median.
Artists would submit ideas and ask for a budget. A second request for proposals would go out for a contractor to build it.
For Artesia Boulevard, the council and Waterfront and Economic Development Director Greg Kapovich established that an archway would likely go west of Inglewood Avenue.
“If they’re done right, they can be quite helpful (in economic development),” said City Manager Mike Witzansky.
“The biggest problem with Artesia is it looks too industrial,” said City Councilman Todd Loewenstein.
The project, and something for Riviera Village, would be at least partly paid for by the John Parsons City Art Fund, which contains more than $950,000.ER
