An estimated 550 people took in the annual Redondo Beach Memorial Day ceremony at Veterans Park, including Congressman Ted Lieu, State Senator Ben Allen and State Assemblyman Al Muratsuchi. Lieu noted to the crowd how he would fly back to Washington, D.C. the next day to “vote yes on the bipartisan debt-ceiling deal.”

The keynote speaker was U.S. Navy (Reserve) Rear Admiral Larry Watkins, Deputy Commander, Third U.S. Fleet.

The flag at the Veterans Park flagpole – replaced at Veterans Day and Memorial Day each year – was presented to Major Katherine Portillo, of Hawthorne, retired U.S. Air Force, who works at Los Angeles Air Force base.

Music for the ceremony was provided by the Redondo Union High School Wind Ensemble – including the themes for each military branch.
