RUHS Principal Anthony Bridi and campus safety assistant Mitchell Yonemura were saluted Tuesday night for their actions Dec. 5 in apprehending a student with a gun.

“These two are very courageous,” Superintendent Nicole Wesley said as she presented both men with a certificate marking their bravery.

School Resource Police Officer Jenna Wolfinger said that Bridi and Yonemura were right with police during a search for the boy, who was found with a gun.

“This is a principal who did not hesitate,” Wesley said of Bridi. “He showed courage that he would do anything to protect the students of Redondo Beach.”

In other remarks about last Monday and Tuesday, Dec. 4-5, Wesley thanked district staff,  PTA Council presidents, and the school board, as well as students, who reported what they had heard about a gun on campus, on back-to-back days.

“Definitely thank our students for speaking up,” she said.

Wesley said a newsletter will be sent out Thursday to the school district community with updates. She said that police expect to complete their investigation soon after the new year starts.

Wesley also thanked BeachLife Festival co-founder Allen Sanford, and former Redondo Police Chief Keith Kauffman, now a festival staff member, for referring the school district to BeachLife’s security contractor, who set up metal detectors at the high school in 24 hours. ER
