Mayor Brand Paddle-out is Saturday
A paddle-out in honor of late Redondo Beach Mayor Bill Brand starts at 11 a.m. Saturday on the beach by Veterans Park, with a picnic to follow.
Board drop-off starts at 9:30 a.m. After a short beach presentation, mourners will paddle, accompanying one of Brand’s surfboards, unridden and decorated with flowers. The former mayor and environmental activist’s ashes will be scattered in the ocean.
Light to give State of the City Thursday
Redondo Beach Mayor Jim Light will give the annual “State of the City” address at two events Thursday, May 9, first at 9 a.m. at Sonesta Hotel, sponsored by the Redondo Beach Chamber of Commerce, followed by a free event at 6 p.m. at the Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center.
Cost for the morning presentation is $45 for Chamber of Commerce members and $65 for non-members.
Light was appointed mayor in February to complete the late Bill Brand’s final term, concluding in March 2025.
Woman’s Clubs restart annual spaghetti dinner
The Redondo Beach Woman’s Clubs of Hermosa and Redondo Beach will hold their 14th Annual Firefighters’ Spaghetti Dinner Saturday, May 11 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Redondo Beach Woman’s Club, 400 South Broadway. The evening will include a silent auction, a plant and bake sale, and kids activities such as face painting and balloon twisting.
The event, a benefit for the Redondo Beach Fire Department Community Relief Fund, and the city’s two Woman’s Clubs, has not been held since 2019 due to the pandemic.
Cost is $15 for adults, with children 8 and under free. ER
