The City of Manhattan Beach has chosen a new head of public works, city officials announced Thursday.

Tony Olmos, a civil engineer with nearly 20 years of experience working for municipalities throughout Orange County and Los Angeles County, will begin at the end of this month, City Manager Dave Carmany said. He was selected among 68 applicants.
“Tony Olmos brings an impressive background and hands-on experience to head our Public Works Department,” Carmany said in a statement. “… We are looking forward to the new insights and leadership he will bring to the table adding a new level of opportunities to the department.”
Olmos, a La Palma resident, holds a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Cal State Long Beach. He previously served as the chief engineer and assistant director of OC Engineering for the County of Orange. Prior to that, he has served as a city engineer for the cities of Huntington Beach, Brea, Santa Fe Springs and Santa Ana.
“I am committed to providing the highest level of service possible,” he said in a statement. “I have had the good fortune of working with similar agencies which gives me a unique perspective of the issues and the community expectations that come with a coastal city.”
Olmos will be succeeding Jim Arndt, who served six years as public works director and retired in May.
