Beach Cities Sports: Baseball, running, surfing and more

Baseball: Beach City Baseball Academy is donating five thousand dollars each to both Manhattan Beach and El Segundo Little Leagues in an effort to bring quality baseball to the South Bay area. The donation is part of a continuing commitment by BCBA to promoting the sport within the community. They host free batting lessons on weekends for children with special needs and have teamed up with Trosky Baseball for players over the age of 14 to extend baseball development skills. Registration is available for the Sea Hawk elite Winter Baseball Camp to be held from 9 a.m. – 1 pm. Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 24-25, 2015 at Alta Vista Park. Open to players ages 7-14, the camp teaches fundamental skill developments focused on preparing players for the next level. The camp is run by Redondo Union High School head coach Jeff Baumback and his coaching staff along with former professional player and current scout with the Texas Rangers, Todd Guggiana. Redondo Union High School kicks off its season-long celebration of 100 Years of Redondo Baseball with its annual Alumni Game to be held at 12 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28 at Memorial Field. Running:  Registration is open for the 37th annual Redondo Beach Super Bowl Sunday 10K/5K Run/Walk presented by Kaiser Permanente to be held Sunday, Feb. 1, 2015. More than 9, 000 race enthusiasts will congregate at Seaside Lagoon for the 10K, 5K and 10K baby buggy races and popular costume contest presented by the King Harbor Association. The event also includes a two-day Health and Fitness Expo presented by Michelob Ultra. Entry fee is $32. A combo package is available for $52 (add $5 Dec. 16 – Jan. 29). Custom awards will be presented to the top three male and female finishers in each category. Two dollars of each entry fee will be donated to the Jim Allen Fund, a longtime Redondo Beach City employee diagnosed with ALS. To register, visit redondo10K.com.

 

The annual Village Runner St. Patrick’s Day 5K Run/Community Walk will take place Sunday, March 15 beginning at 8 a.m. The 5K race starts and finishes in front of Village Runner, 1811-A Catalina Ave. in Redondo Beach and includes a t-shirt, chip timing, age division awards and cash prizes to the top three overall male and female runners. The Leprechaun Dash for the Gold follows the 5K where kids ages 4-12 will compete in appropriate age groups. Entry fees are $35 for the 5K; $25 for the Kids Dash (add $5 after Feb. 13). Swimming: Southern California Aquatics (SCAQ), the largest Masters swimming program in the United States holds a variety of programs at Redondo Union High School. SCAQ holds weekly stroke clinics and ocean workouts as preparation for triathlons, ocean competitions and pool meets with practices fitting most work schedules for swimmers of every level. Surfing: The South Bay Boardriders continues its South Bay Surf Series on Saturdays. The series features all age groups, from the under-9 Micro Grom Division to the over-50 Legends Division. Participants receive t-shirts and other goodies and finalists from each division win prize packages. Surf Series ratings winner receive prizes such as free trips, surfboards, wetsuits and more. Contests scheduled: Jan. 24 – Dive N Surf at El Porto; Feb. 28 – E.T. Surf at 26th. St., Manhattan Beach; Mar. 28 – Becker at 26th St.; April 25 – Spyder at Manhattan Beach Pier.
