Local scout troop earns Silver Award

Girl Scout Troop 3975, comprised of eighth graders from Manhattan, Hermosa and Redondo, recently completed its Silver Award project by conducting a camping training workshop at Valley Park for nearly 100 younger Manhattan Beach Girl Scouts. Workshops included erecting and breaking down a tent, safely starting a fire, packing gear and washing and sanitizing dishes.
MB Councilman elected to ICA Board
Councilman Wayne Powell was elected earlier this month to serve on the Independent Cities Association’s Board of Directors. ICA, a nonprofit established in 1961 by full-service cities in Southern California to improve local government, consists of 40 cities, including El Segundo, Gardena, Hawthorne, Hermosa Beach, Inglewood, Los Angeles, Torrance and Manhattan Beach. Former Redondo Beach councilman Pat Aust was also elected onto the board. Hermosa Beach mayor Kit Bobko was elected as vice president.
‘Catch-up’ council meeting scheduled
A “catch-up” City Council meeting will be held August 13 at 6 p.m. in the council chambers, according to City Manager Dave Carmany. The meeting will include previously postponed agenda items amidst council’s struggle to keep apace with lengthy agendas while respecting its self-imposed 11 p.m. deadline.
