“Dine Around Artesia” returns Thursday, Oct. 5

“Dine Around Artesia” is back. After an 11-year hiatus, the North Redondo Beach Business Association (NRBBA) resumes the event Oct. 5 from 5:30 – 8:30 p.m. Participants buy a wristband, granting them access to 14 eateries, each with something different.

“These family-owned restaurants reflect the diversity of our community,” said Mickey Marraffino, NRBBA president. “The combination of walking along the Boulevard and sharing this experience with neighbors truly connects community and commerce.”

Many of the restaurants that were part of the 2012 “Dine Around’ are part of the reprisal.

The evening starts with a check-in at South Bay Hardware, between 5 – 8 p.m. Guests will pick up pre-purchased wristbands and be given a map of Artesia, marked with the “Dine Around” restaurants. These include Al-Hamra Kabob Grill, Yanagi, Broginos, Menchies, Las Brisas, Blue Salt Fish Grill, The Empanada Shop, The Great Room, Tommy & Atticus bakery and more.

Tickets are available at nrbba.org/dine-around. Cost is $35.

City goes out for proposals to build public boat launch

The Redondo Beach city council approved a request-for-proposals Tuesday to build a public boat launch on the waterfront near the vacant Samba restaurant.

City Waterfront Director Greg Kapovich estimated the project will take three and a half to four years to complete, from hiring a contractor to approval of designs and construction.

Kapovich said he expects the Samba building will be demolished, to create the space for the launch and parking. The existing boat hoist nearby may or may not be retained.

Kapovich said that the loss of the city-owned restaurant space of Samba may be made up by creating another restaurant lease in the area of the pier, such as within the former Fun Factory or on Pier Plaza.

The Los Angeles County Teachers of the Year honors, in its 51st year, is given by the County Office of Education. Recipients were saluted at a banquet Sept. 22. Baker and the others now advance to the statewide competition this fall.

The 26 year veteran teacher said she runs her classroom on two rules — to be kind and always try your best. She said this helps to make students comfortable in sharing their thoughts and ideas, and creates a community of respect. ER
