About Town Redondo: Late boardmember, Public Works retiree, city logo contest

Ted Semaan, retiring Redondo Beach Public Works director, speaks after receiving the City Employee of the Year Chamber of Commerce Award last October at the Redondo Beach Elks Lodge.

Former RBUSD school boardmember Staich dies

Former Redondo Unified School District boardmember Arlene Staich died March 12 at age 81.

A retired physics teacher at Mira Costa High School, she served on the Redondo school board from 2003-11.

“Arlene was extremely dedicated to the betterment of the students, staff and community,” said Jane Diehl, a current Beach Cities Health District boardmember, who served with Staich on the school board.

Staich was a longtime Redondo Beach resident.

Public Works Director Semaan retires

Ted Semaan, retiring city public works director, received a Key to the City March 19 from Mayor Jim Light. Semaan has worked for Redondo Beach in the role since 2015. He will be succeeded by City Engineer Andy Winje.

Semaan was named City Employee of the Year at last October’s Redondo Beach Chamber of Commerce Awards luncheon. Winje, who started with the city in 2016, was named 2022 City Employee of the Year.

Aside from being city engineer leading a group of 10 staff engineers, Winje served as the capital improvement projects manager and covered the vacant position of traffic engineer – taking care of permit requests at city hall.

“As busy as (Winje) is, he’s also acutely aware of the status at the counter,” City Manager Mike Witzansky said last year. “He really has a customer-service mindset and you don’t always get that with engineers.”

Redondo Beach Public Works has 111 employees, most of whom work in operations/maintenance throughout the city.
