Cannabis proponents contend Nehrenheim violated campaign laws

The Economic Development Reform Coalition of Southern California, the group behind Measure E, contends that election laws were violated in the campaign against the measure by Mayor Pro-Tem Nils Nehrenheim.

George M. Yin, an attorney for EDRCSC, wrote a letter to L.A. County District Attorney George Gascon dated Oct. 14, saying that Nehrenheim had used the city’s seal and “More to Sea” logo on his own website and social media postings against Measure E.

“Once again, this out-of-town special interest shows how abysmally they do not understand our community,” said Nehrenheim in resp;onse to the charge. “There are actually two logos he is referring to. One logo the city started using in 2001 and was never trademarked. The other logo was in 2010, which was service-marked by the Redondo Beach Chamber of Commerce in 2014.”

By law, city representatives are barred from using public resources for a campaign. Yin and the EDRCSC argue that Nehrenheim’s postings suggest they are official statements authorized by the city.

Yin asked that the D.A. investigate.

Nehrenheim contends that the 2001 pier, sun and water logo, as well as the “More to Sea” are in the public domain because they were not renewed as “service marks” in 2021.
