Public Health warning in effect for ocean

Redondo Beach is under a Los Angeles County Department of Public Health Advisory due to possible increases in bacteria in the waters along local beaches. Issued April 7, because of recent rainfall, the warning asks people to stay away from ocean water for three days after it rains, to avoid sickness.

“Bacteria levels can increase significantly during and after rainstorms, as contaminants within the runoff enters the ocean,” according to the LA County Department of Public Health. “Elevated bacteria levels in ocean water may cause illness, especially in children and the elderly.”

Recorded information on beach conditions is available 24 hours per day on the county’s beach closure hotline: 1-800-525-5662.

Alta Vista neighbors organize against pickleball

A resident of South Juanita Avenue presented 32 signatures to the city council Tuesday night from homeowners “vehemently opposed” to striping pickleball courts on the Alta Vista Park tennis courts.

Two other nearby residents spoke against the proposed courts too, in public comment to non-agenda items.

The city is considering a plan to paint four pickleball courts on two tennis courts for dual-use at the facility.

Seventy-six artists submit designs for city logo

City hall took in submissions from 76 people for its open call to design a new city logo. Some of the 76 turned in more than one design. Included in the mix was Jordis Small, a graphic designer whom the city contracted with last year to design the new logo. She submitted a “two-sail” version of her original single sail design.

The city council in February opened up the project for more submissions, closing April 8. Artists were not required to live in Redondo Beach.

On May 7, councilmembers will each present their top choice and give staff further direction in choosing a final logo.

Earth Day activities this weekend

South Bay Parkland Conservancy will hold its fifth annual Earth Day events at Wilderness Park April 20-21, beginning with habitat restoration work at the park Saturday, and on Sunday, nature walks, educational seminars, music and crafts and activities booths, put on by local community organizations and environmental groups. A celebratory luncheon will recognize the Conservancy’s volunteer efforts over the past year. ER
