+ Sara Deen, DDS AAUW honoree
Fran Brown, Co-Chair of the Palos Verdes Peninsula Branch of the American Association of University Women, welcomed 40 branch members and guests to the Annual Recognition Luncheon on June 10. Sara Deen, DDS, was recognized as the 2023 Status of Women Award Winner. The luncheon was held at The Original Red Onion Restaurant in Rolling Hills Estates. Deen was lauded for her work with the South Coast Interfaith Council (SCIC); as a liaison between SCIC and Clergy and Laity United for Economic Justice (CLUE). Dee also serves as youth facilitator for New Ground’s Muslims and Jews Inspiring Change (MAJIC). In 2022, Deen was elected to the board of the Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District.
Branch members Libby Bergen and Dale Richards, were recognized as Named Gift Honorees for their outstanding, long-term service to the Branch. Brown presented a President’s pin to her retiring Co-Chair, Leann Roque, and introduced newly elected Co-Chair Joanie Gale.
Ten Branch members were recognized for 25 years of Branch membership: Anne Destabelle, Pilar Hale, Eileen Edelson, Nancy Mahr, Shirley Collins, Ruth Bloland, Margery Norris, Fran Wielin, Rowie Wolf, and Myrna Plost.
Luncheon committee members included Libby Bergen, Leann Roque, Shera Dolmatz, Joanie Gale, Elayne Nahman, Jane Harris, Ruth Bloland, Eileen Edelson, Margery Norris, Nancy Rayner and Kathy Berg.

+ Dog Days at Botanic Gardens
Dogs and their people are invited to visit the South Coast Botanic Gardens on Sunday, June 25, and on Sunday July 25. Reservations are required to tour the 87-acre, lush, super-bloom garden. + Beach Art Winner
Dagny Tang, of Palos Verdes Estates, a fourth grader at Montemalaga Elementary holds her winning entry in the Los Angeles County Department of Beaches annual “Can the Trash” art contest, from among over 2,500 entries. Tang also won the contest last year. The art will appear on thousands of beach trash cans this summer, from Malibu to Long Beach.
+ Civics in Action
The Palos Verdes Faculty Association has been picketing Peninsula schools to enlist support for what they say is “salaries competitive with surrounding districts.” PVFA President Tim Coleman said he is hopeful a teachers’ strike can be avoided.
