Local tunes: The Standing Room in Hermosa beach continues its bid to become the hot spot for local music with a full line up this week. Thursday brings BJ Armstrong in for happy hour followed by a full set at 9:30 p.m. by resident beach reggae band The Lucky Ones. Chinese art: The 2015 Maeya Art Festival has gathered a number of prestigious Chinese calligraphers and artists. From January 23th to 25th, Maeya Art Festival will present a variety of Chinese painting and calligraphy exhibitions, such as Chinese traditional paintings,, gouaches, Chinese watercolors and more. The exhibit runs this weekend from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. with an award ceremony on Sunday at 6 p.m. at the Promenade on the Peninsula, Room 261, 550 Deep Valley Drive in Rolling Hills Estates.

Love and taxes: Palos Verdes Performing Art presents “Love, Sex and the I.R.S.,” a hilarious farce about two bumbling tax cheats whose ruse unravels when the I.R.S. comes to investigate. The wild cross-dressing comedy like is a ‘70s style cross between “I Love Lucy” and “Some Like it Hot.” Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. from January 23 – February 8. Comedy fest: Old Town Music Hall presents their ever-popular Laurel & Hardy Festival this weekend. A favorite at Old Town Music Hall, this popular comedy duo headlines yet another hilarious program of silent & sound shorts. Art and modernity: The Palos Verde Art Center presents Paul Jean Martel: Post Impressionist, a comprehensive survey of the artist’s work from small studio sketches to fully realized paintings. On view January 23, 2015 – March 8, 2015, the exhibition explores the trajectory of the artist’s career both in Europe and the United States. Featuring more than 80 paintings and drawings produced from 1896 To 1944, including many works that have not been seen by the public since they arrived by ship from Europe. Co-organized by the Palos Verdes Art Center and the Martel Family, the exhibition encourages the viewer to engage and question their relationship to a world of a romanticized past when life rolled at a much gentler pace.
