While most Girl Scout troops use the proceeds from their annual cookie sales to benefit their troop, Brownie Troop 6345 decided to take a more altruistic route. The second-grade troop chose to use $300 of their proceeds to purchase goods to donate to the Ronald McDonald House in Long Beach.
The Ronald McDonald House Charities provide shelter and financial support to the families of critically injured children. The Long Beach location, across the street from Long Beach Memorial Medical Center, is one of over 300 Ronald McDonald Houses around the world.
Lisa Gurley, Troop 6345’s troop leader, chose the Long Beach Ronald McDonald House of its proximity. But the decision to donate any money at all was made by the Brownies, themselves.
“They wanted to help children, and we thought this would be a way that they would be able to do that,” said Gurley.
The troop used their funds to purchase pantry supplies and other items from a list provided by the House. They personally delivered the supplies and received a tour of the facilities.
“They were excited. I think they did feel a good sense of gratitude and pride,” Gurley said. Each of the girls was honored to have the opportunity to help those less fortunate than themselves.
