
Over 700 competitors participated in the 19th Annual Hermosa Beach Triathlon on Sunday. The race began with a quarter mile swim on the south side of the Hermosa Beach pier, followed by a 10 mile bike that went up Pier Avenue and then looped around Valley and Ardmore drives, before returning to the pier. The race ended with a three mile run along The Strand to the Manhattan Beach border, and back to the pier. Dylan Efron, 26, of Los Angeles, dominated the race with a time of 51 minutes, 5 seconds. His winning time was 1 minute, 27 seconds faster than second place finisher Matthew Olivas, 20, of Sherman Oaks who finished in 52:32. Tim Poydenis, 33, of Manhattan Beach finished third at 53:06.
Jennifer Temperley, 45, of Manhattan Beach was the first female to cross the finish line. The certified spinning instructor, fitness coach and personal trainer finished with a time of 57:24, after placing third in last year’s competition.
Redondo Beach 22-year-old Sierra Ponthier finished a close second at 57:56 and was followed by Emily Kalbach, 33, of Santa Monica (59:05).
Males winning their age groups included: Ashton White (Oak Park, 14-17, 55:44), Sean Suarez (Long Beach, 18-24, 55:20), Efron (25-29), Poydenis (30-34), Andrew Raynor (Los Angeles, 35-39, 53:19), Billy Corvalan (Manhattan Beach, 40-44, 53:28), Ricardo Fiorentino (Santa Monica, 45-49, 55:05), Paul Connolly (Carlsbad, 50-54, 53:13), Steve Catena (Torrance, 55-59, 57:36), John Grotzinger (San Marino, 60-64, 1:03:41) and Steve Polley (Thousand Oaks, 65-69, 1:04:25).
The Thunder Thighs winner was Gregory Strausberg of Los Angeles (57:39). The Clydesdale (220-224 lbs.) winner was Dan Cecilio of Santa Barbara (1:02.39) while the Clydesdale (225+) winner was Manhattan Beach’s Jack Nunn who posted the 15th best overall time at 55:11.
Females capturing their age division titles were: Ella Parsley (Manhattan Beach, 14-17, 1:05:22), Ponthier (18-24), Janel Peralez (Fremont, 25-29, 1:03:37), Kalmbach (30-34), Allyson Estess (Hermosa Beach, 35-39, 59:22), Megan Granich (California, MD, 40-44, 1:01:35), Temperley (45-49), Debbie Booth (Rancho Palos Verdes, 50-54, 1:03:52), Nicholisa Contis (Topanga, 55-59, 1:09:23), Maria Marrone (Pacific Palisades, 60-64, 1:26:54) and Robin Melville (Marina Del Rey, 65-69, 1:42:08).
Redondo Beach’s Tessa Sphar won the Athena division with a time of 1:18:56. In team competition, MSR1 captured the Coed race (55:37).
