A split-level, mid-century home in the 700 block of 24th Place in Hermosa Beach, just west of Pacific Coast High, caught fire at about 8 a.m. this morning (Thursday, July 1). Los Angeles County Firefighters, from the Pier Avenue station in Hermosa, quickly contained the fire. Neighboring homes were not visibly damaged.
Owner Michael Deng said he and his wife and child were away when the fire started. He said it appeared to have started in the kitchen, and that he thought the house would have to be torn down. Luckily the home has fire sprinkler installation and helped to prevent a bigger damage.
Firefighters ripped holes in the roof and the west side of the house to extinguish the fire.
Tony Cabes, a contractor building a house two doors to the west of the burning house, said the windows blew out just as he reached the front door.
“I was going to go in and try to stop it, but it was too hot,” he said.
Pacific Coast Highway, southbound, between Artesia Boulevard on the north and 21st Street on the south, was closed until about 10:30 a.m. ER
Two hours after the fire started, firefighters were still working to fully extinguish the fire. The cause of the fire had not been determined.
