High winds don’t stop Hermosans

Winds reached upwards of 28 mph at the beach with gusts of 50 mph near LAX on Monday, creating seven to nine foot waves and causing most beach-goers to abandon regular ocean-side activities. However, a few daring souls braved the wind-whipped strand.

“As soon as we saw the trees blowing in North Redondo we knew we had to get our [butts] out here,” said Faye Jennings, who avidly scours the beach with a metal detector, but hasn’t been out recently. According to Jennings and her partner in detecting, windy days are the best times to search for treasure at the beach because the wind churns up the sand. Jennings said that in the past she has found rings and watches as well as money and lots of bottle caps.

Further down The Strand across from the “Poop Deck,” a group of volleyball players didn’t let the wind stop them from playing. Instead, the high winds blew their ball off target and often stopped them from scoring.

“Usually we play very professionally, but not today,” one player said. ER
