Jeff Lingle said he was going for a contemporary Gauguin affect in his painting on a utility box at 14th and Hermosa Avenue of a woman surfing. Gauguin was a late 19th-century French artist known for his Tahitian paintings. Lingle’s painting also complements the adjacent mural by John Van Hamersveld, which traces the history of surfing. Approximately two dozen Hermosa utility boxes are being painted by local artists through an agreement between the City and Rafael McMaster, of the Indivisible Arts gallery.
