Pioneering cyclist Julian Katz was remembered Sunday with dedications of the Julian Katz Bike Route, and the Julian Kaatz Bike Corral in downtown Hermosa Beach, After he retired from a career as an engineer Katz served two terms on the Hermosa Beach Public Works Commission and was president of the Hermosa Beach Lawn Bowling Club.

But it was as an advocate for cycling infrastructure that Katz truly shined. He was a constant presence at meetings in cities across the South Bay, and an essential voice in securing city approvals for the South Bay Bicycle Master Plan, which includes bike sharrows along Hermosa Avenue.

Katz passed away in 2018.

Following the dedications, Assembly Al Muratsuchi led the annual Julian Katz bike ride along The Esplanade and the Strand, from Redondo Beach to the Manhattan Beach pier. ER
