E-bike tipping point
Dear ER:
I had just returned from the desert Sunday, and was working in my garage when I heard yelling and screaming. When I peered out, several males on e-bikes with full masks turned onto 19th Court doing 30 to 35 miles an hour. I was appalled at the speed. They were chasing a single e-bike rider, running for his life. He didn’t even bother to stop on Hermosa Avenue. The tandem with masks that were chasing him almost got hit by a car on Hermosa Ave. When they turned around and started back west, I stepped into the alley and had my hands up yelling at them to stop. I read them the riot act about almost getting their asses killed on Hermosa Avenue. All along I’m wondering, Why do they have their face mask on and their heads covered. I reminded them that the person that would have hit them, and possibly killed them — that the memory would live with them forever. And what about their parents, mourning the loss of their children.
Luckily, they left passively. Later, I heard fighting up on The Strand. A neighbor jumped in to stop the fight. And mind you, this went on for over two hours. I went down to speak to the local kids, probably 12 e-bikes, some of them riding tandem I told them to use their phones to call the police department. I am appalled by what I saw Sunday. I have had it with e-bikes, and these selfish parents who refuse to supervise their children. These parents need to stop giving $3000 to $15,000 motor bikes to children. And why are they still riding the e-bikes on The Strand? I pay taxes to this City and what is it giving me?? Certainly not my safety or my security. E-bikes should be banned in our community. I don’t know if these masked hoodlums were here to steal e-bikes from the rich kids, but shame on their parents and shame on our City Council, which allowed this to happen. I’d really like somebody to tell me why e-bikes allowed on our streets without a license, and why is a child driving them without any knowledge of the rules of the road? I guess the question needs to go to the parents, whose children are being raised like they were born in a barn. If our City Council, and police chief cannot handle this, then get out of your job. Find somebody who has a stern hand, and can run the city before we lose it to the hoodlums.

It is with some sadness that I read the ER coverage of the 26th street cell tower, which missed so much of the target (“Neighbors protest cell towers,” ER April 6, 2020). One issue for many neighbors was the 18 word notice from the city was inadequate in light of the fact that nearby residents would see a $150,000 to $300,000 decrease in property values, according to several expert sources. A second issue: do we want a large array of antennas that focus the property value and health impacts on a small community of residents, or should we have smaller, more distributed antenna arrays that more equitably distribute these impacts on a larger number of residents? A third issue is did the city follow its own municipal codes in “finding“ that a large array at 26th Street was the least impactful site; especially in light of the fact that the city planning commission and did not even review a list of alternative sites or lower impact sites; and has provided no evidence that the required “”finding of least significance” was ever made. And finally, what should be clear to anyone who has read studies that have been done: we really can’t say at all if these 5g towers are safe or not. The required science hasn’t been done. I don’t know if it’s safe, you don’t know and anyone that says they do is full of it.
The studies to date have not focused on the non-thermal effects of non-ionizing radiation on cellular metabolism, even though independent peer reviewed scholarly articles point to significant risks of this non ionizing radiation on cellular metabolism. The studies to date mainly focus on thermal (heat related) effects, and have been largely funded by wireless industry advocates. Think big tobacco, big oil and big pharma and now Big Wireless.
What we do know is that large cell tower arrays like 26th street can have a significant impact on nearby property values and rightfully so. The jury is still out on safety.
And to those that would dismiss 26th resident concerns based simply by denying cell tower safety concerns cart blanc; well they are doing the community a real disservice.

Steve Mangiagli is and artist, and pretty much glassed all my boards (“2023 SWOF Inductee — Mangiagli was low profile, top producing board builder,” ER SWOF April 20, 2023). I worked for Becker Surf in the ‘80s. Steve was the nicest guy. Along with partners Dave Hollander and Phil Becker, they were the best trio ever to represent South Bay surfing. Congrats to Steve on his well deserved induction into the Hermosa Beach Surfing Walk of Fame.

Historical boondoggle
Dear ER:
We live in a Redondo Beach home that has historical designation (“Hermosa Beach Historical Approval nears,” ER April 20, 2023). But we also have an Historical Homes Commission, which grants approval. I can’t believe the Hermosa home owner paid over $8,000 for some consultant. What a boondoggle.

Heated recusal issue
Dear ER:
Redondo’s fire department earned a Class 1 rating from the National Insurance Services Office. This put Redondo Beach among the nation’s top 400 fire departments “Generational decision:” Council votes to resume county fire study,” ER April 20, 2023). This is something to be proud of and one of the reasons why we need to keep our FD local and not farm it out to the larger, more cumbersome LA County. I expect Councilmember Nils Nehrenheim, an LA County Fire Department employee, to recuse himself from the vote. It would be a sign of good faith for him to stay out of this issue.
