Not so secret gift
Dear ER:
What an amazingly heartwarming (and heart breaking) article (“Mr. Hughes’ Secret Gift,” ER July 4, 2024). Although the writer said he didn’t attend the 3rd period service due to embarrassment, it was most likely due to shock, which is understandable for such a young person. This was a beautiful tribute to teacher Ed Hughes, of Begg School, as well as the writer’s friend Brandon. A great message to all the kind teachers out there who make indelible impressions on such young forming minds.

Memories
Dear ER:
I taught arts and crafts, drama and many other subjects at Begg School for many years. Steve Fulleron’s wonderful story about the influence of one teacher brought back so many memories. Every teacher wants to hear the good things! A few of my students from those years have found me on Facebook. Some have come to visit me since I retired! The teachers at Begg were like a big family and I became a friend of Ed Hughes. Of course his death affected us. Thank you for the memories.

Making a difference
Dear ER:
What a terrific article about how one teacher can change a life (“Mr. Hughes’ Secret Gift,” ER July 4, 2024). A wonderful statement about how teaching professionals are so important for all of us.

City Charter a litmus test
Dear ER:
In the upcoming Manhattan Beach City Council election on November 5, we need to elect three councilmembers who will explore adopting a city charter. All prospective candidates should be asked to make a campaign pledge to explore adopting a city charter. With a city charter, we will secure Manhattan’s public safety future, guaranteeing that our City will always have its own city prosecutor, fire department and police department. In addition, a city charter would give our City maximum local control of all municipal affairs including planning, zoning, elections and other important local matters. With Sacramento usurping more and more “local control” from cities, it is time for the City of Manhattan Beach to adopt a city charter. Clearly, we cannot trust Sacramento to protect the residents of our community and our exceptional quality of life.
Unfortunately, there will be candidates who are more loyal to Sacramento or care more about appeasing Sacramento than they do about serving the residents of our community. For that reason, I will be contacting all candidates and asking them to sign a Pledge To Explore Adopting A City Charter.
Elections are about the future. With a City Charter, we can finally have the protections a City Constitution can provide for years to come. A City Charter is a City’s Constitution, one we desperately need now, more than ever. Please support candidates who care enough about our City’s future to explore adopting a City Charter.

Dear ER:
Hermosa Beach needs to post signs informing the public that it is illegal to operate an electric bike or other motorized vehicle on The Strand.

Art’s back
Dear ER:
I’m very encouraged by Kimie Joe’s efforts to put on art shows in downtown Hermosa Beach (“Kimmie Joe Silver’s back in town,” ER July 4, 2024). Each show seems better than the last.

Motor on
Dear ER:
The worst offenders are riding electric motorcycles, not e-bikes (“Escalating e-biker confrontations trigger escalating e-bike restrictions in Redondo, Hermosa, Manhattan,” ER May 15, 2024). Those are motorcycles in every sense of the word and should require registration (with a displayed license plate), as well as insurance, and a motorcycle license. That would help in identifying them for prosecution.
