There was a cause for celebration Tuesday evening at Mira Costa High School in Manhattan Beach. At the centerpiece of the event was the brand new three-story, solar-powered math/science building, phase one of a modernization project at the high school.

Funded by Measure BB, a $67 million public bond campaign approved by Manhattan Beach voters in 2008, the project began in December 2011 and was completed on-time and on-budget. Phase two and three, slated for completion at the end of 2014, entail modernizing classrooms, building a multi-purpose room with a renovated band/orchestra facility and establishing a central outdoor area.

“Today is really the culmination of five-and-a-half years of hard work to make this happen,” said the district’s Board of Trustees president Ida VanderPoorte before the ceremony. “It is due to the support from the community, obviously. It’s all the taxpayers of Manhattan Beach who are supporting this project.”

She continued: “In another two years when all of this construction is done, this will be a campus that’s very much in the 21st century and that community members will be proud of.”

The new 68,000 sq. ft. solar-powered building, open for use since the beginning of this school year, includes 16 math classrooms, nine science classrooms, four laboratories and five “superlabs.”
