The Mira Costa girls beach volleyball team made history Saturday afternoon at Long Beach City College when it beat Redondo to win the first ever Southern Section CIF beach volleyball championship. The CIF made beach volleyball a sanctioned sport this year.

After advancing to the finals without losing a set, the Mustangs swept the Sea Hawks 5-0.

Mira Costa (15-0) rolled through the season with a deep roster featuring six players committed to Division I collegiate beach volleyball programs, and another four committed to play Division I women’s indoor volleyball. The championship victory kept intact Mira Costa’s streak of 149 match victories, dating back nearly a decade, to the start of beach volleyball as a high school sport.

The Mustang boys volleyball reached the Division 1 semifinals last week, where they lost to Newport Harbor in four sets. But by making the semifinals the boys stayed in contention for a state title by advancing to CIF regional play later this month. ER
