Jane Diehl knows how to be president. She brings to bear nine years of school board knowledge, a thorough understanding of RBUSD practices, and the ability to move a six member team briskly along. But because of term limits, her time is up.

Her successor, Anita Avrick, was voted and approved for the top position at last Tuesday’s School Board meeting.

“She’s up for the job,” said Diehl. “All will be good.”

Laura Emdee was voted as vice president, replacing Todd Loewenstein, whose second term also ends next year.

“The reason they gave the positions to us is that they’re leaving in a year,” said Emdee. “We have to develop and understand what’s going on to make us more effective.”

Avrick is not focused on making any immediate changes. She said she would concentrate on this transitional period – the RBUSD school board has been the most stable elected body in the South Bay in terms of lack of turnover –

and learning all she can while she has experienced board members by her side.

“I don’t think the president has any more power than anybody else on the board,” Avrick said.

One goal Avrick did set was to make sure everybody on the board has the chance to lead discussions and be involved in learning how the board works.
