Hoops season tips off with annual Pacific Shores tournaments

The boys basketball season is underway with the 61st Annual Pacific Shores Tournament being played at Mira Costa and Redondo Union High Schools.

Under first-year head coach Reggie Morris, Redondo is hosting a 12-team tournament that includes perennial powers Long Beach Poly, Westchester, Serra and Mayfair.

Competing in Pool A will be Long Beach Poly, Narbonne and Manual Arts. Pool B is comprised of Westchester, Dominguez and Rancho Christian. Pool C teams are Serra, Tesoro and Gardena while host Redondo takes on Mayfair and Locke in Pool D.

Admission is $7 for adults; $5 for students and $3 for kids and senior citizens.

Morris, who won CIF Southern Section titles as head coach at Leuzinger and St. Bernard’s while rely heavily on returning shooting guards Derek Biale and Ian Fox while his underclassmen gain valuable experience in the highly-competitive tournament.

It didn’t take long for Morris to get his first win as Redondo defeated Mayfair 57-37 in its first game in pool play.

Fox and Jeremiah Headley each scored 14 points, Biale had 11 points and Sebastian Lindner added nine points and six rebounds for the Sea Hawks.

Redondo wraps up pool play Wednesday against Locke in an 8 p.m. contest. Third-place teams from each pool will compete in the Bronze Bracket on Thursday. Teams finished first and second in their pool will play in the Gold and Silver Brackets, respectively, on Friday.

Bracket championship games will be held Saturday culminated by the Gold Bracket championship at 5:30 p.m.

Meanwhile, across town, Mira Costa’s Pacific Shores Tournament features eight teams including Banning, Brentwood, Culver City and the host Mustangs in Pool A and Carson, Rolling Hills Prep, Lawndale and Morningside in Pool B. The championship game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Mira Costa opened pool play Monday with a 73-46 victory over Banning. Cole Feaster scored a team-high 15 points, Kevin Kim added 13 points, Justin Strings had 11 points and Oliver Mausner scored 10 points in the win.

The Mustangs defeated Culver City 87-64 Wednesday behind Strings’ 27-point, seven-rebound performance. Mausner scored 18 points, Kim added 16 points, Ryan Kaseff had 11 points and nine rebounds and Feaster contributed nine points and five assists. 

Mira Costa concluded pool play Thursday with an 80-62 loss to Brentwood. Feaster had a team-high 23 points and Strings added 18 points for the Mustangs.

Brentwood will face Lawndale, a 59-37 winner over Morningside, in the championship game Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

The girls teams from Mira Costa and Redondo also opened their seasons this week competing in the Inglewood City of Champions Tournament.

Redondo defeated Compton 50-27 in its first game behind Taylor Smith’s 15-point performance. Micaela Enriquez scored 10 points, Inara Nyingifa added seven points and Bella Hall and Kourtney Noa scored six points apiece.

The Sea Hawks remained undefeated with a 57-30 win over Hawthorne on Tuesday. Hall recorded 15 points and 11 rebounds, Alex Mohr added 11 points and Nyingifa contributed 10 points and 13 rebounds for Redondo, which faced St. Bernard Wednesday in the quarterfinals.

Unfortunately for Redondo, St. Bernard held the Sea Hawks scoreless in the third quarter en route to a 62-46 win. Nyingifa led Redondo with 14 points and Hall added nine points in the loss.

Mira Costa won its first game of the season Wednesday after losses to Long Beach Poly and Keppel. The Mustangs got on track with a 44-34 victory over South Torrance.

Haley Tojo led Mira Costa with 13 points and Cameryn Chan added 11 points.
