Signature count appears to force Gran recall; official count pending
Proponents of the effort to recall Redondo Beach District 4 Councilman John Gran may have cleared the bar to force a recall election. A raw count of 2,814 signatures was submitted to the Redondo Beach City Clerk’s office on Jan. 9, alongside 240 signed requests for signature withdrawal.
According to California Election Code, proponents require valid signatures totaling 25 percent of District 4’s 9,145 registered voters, or a total of 2,287 valid signatures, to qualify the recall.
Should the raw count hold, minus the requests for withdrawal, the total of 2,574 signatures would well clear the signature threshold.
At its Tuesday meeting, the Redondo Beach City Council approved a resolution to pay for the Los Angeles County Recorder/Registrar to verify the signatures, at a total cost of no more than $3,000. The County has 30 days to verify the signatures.
Redondo Beach Police Department hosts St. Baldrick’s Event
On Saturday, January 18, the Redondo Beach Police Department will host a head-shaving fundraiser event, in association with St. Baldrick’s Foundation, in honor of Cait Naylor. The event will be held at 200 N. Pacific Coast Highway, Redondo Beach CA 90277 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Last November, Redondo Beach Police Captain Jon Naylor’s daughter, Cait, was diagnosed with Rhabdomyosarcoma, an aggressive form of cancer. To support Cait and the Naylor family as they fight their way through treatment, RBPD has partnered with St. Baldrick’s to host a head-shaving event. A donation of $25 per haircut will go to Cait to assist her and her family while raising awareness of this type of cancer.
Residents are invited to sit in the barber’s chair and in a blink of an eye become a hero for kids with cancer. The event is open to everyone who wishes to participate or donate.

Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Operation Planned for Redondo Beach
That same day, RBPD will take part in a bicycle and pedestrian safety enforcement operation aimed at educating cyclists, drivers, and pedestrians on traffic laws, rules, and responsibilities.
On Saturday, January 18, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., officers will be looking for violations made by cyclists, drivers, and pedestrians that put roadway users at risk. These violations include drivers speeding, making illegal turns, failing to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks, failing to stop for signs and signals or any other dangerous violation.
Officers will also look for pedestrians who cross the street illegally or fail to yield to drivers who have the right of way. Cyclists will be stopped when riding on the wrong side of the road, not complying with stop signs and signals, or other violations of the same traffic laws that apply to them as drivers.
Bicycle and pedestrian fatalities are rising at an alarming rate. In 2016, 138 bicyclists and 867 pedestrians were killed on California roads. In 2019, RBPD investigated one fatal and 40 injury collisions involving bicyclists and pedestrians. Already in 2020, RBPD has investigated two injury collisions involving bicyclists and pedestrians.
“Whether you are on foot, behind the wheel or on a bike, you play a part in roadway safety,” Redondo Beach Police Motor Officer Bill Turner said. “Understanding the rules of the road using all modes of transportation helps ensure we all get to our destination safely.”
