Elite CrossFit athletes from around the world had their conditioning put to a practical test at the Reebok Cross 2015 Games in Hermosa Beach Wednesday morning. Under the watchful eyes of Los Angeles County Lifeguards on PWCs and paddleboards, competitors entered the water on the north side of the Hermosa pier, swam to the end the pier and swam back to the beach on the south side of the pier. The swim was roughly 500 yards. Then the competitors grabbed 12-foot stock paddleboards and paddled from the pier  to the Redondo breakwater and back, a distance of roughly one mile. Competitors then swam around the pier a second time.

Several thousand spectators were on the pier and the beach at 7 a.m. to watch the start of the women’s swim and paddle race.
