School Board forum set
Manhattan Beach School Board candidates on the November 8 general election ballot, have been invited to participate in a forum hosted by the League of Women Voters of the Beach Cities, and Easy Reader. The forum will be held Wednesday, September 21 at 7 p.m. at the Mira Costa High School Small Theater.
Six candidates are running for three open seats on the school board, including incumbent Jen Fenton. She is joined on the ballot by Christy Barnes, Tina Shivpuri, John Uriostegui, Wysh Weinstein, and Mike Welsh. MBUSD Board of Education President Sally Austin Peel, and board member Jen Cochran are not seeking reelection.
Members of the audience will be invited to submit questions on cards that will be read aloud by the moderator. Verbal questions from the audience will not be accepted.
Hermosa 9/11 wreath laying
The City of Hermosa Beach’s Annual 9/11 Memorial Wreath Laying Ceremony will be held Sunday, September 11, at the city’s 9/11 Memorial, on the Greenbelt, where it meets Pier Avenue. The ceremony will start at 1:15 p.m. Flowers will be available for the public to place on the memorial.
Hermosa View Ribbon cutting
A ribbon cutting for the newly remodeled Hermosa View School, on Prospect Avenue, was scheduled for Saturday, September 6. But because rain is forecast for Saturday, the ribbon cutting has been canceled. It will be rescheduled in late September, or early October, according to Hermosa Schools Superintendent Jason Johnson.
Construction began in July of last year, shortly after construction was completed on the new Hermosa Vista School, which replaced the long closed North School.
View and Vista were funded by Measure S, a $59 million bond proposal approved by voters in 2016. At the time, Hermosa Valley had 948 third through eighth grade students on a campus designed for 750 students. View had 481 kindergarten through second grade students on a campus designed for 216 students.
New classrooms were added and old classrooms modernized in View’s zero net energy redesign. ER
