Twenty-two students and two teachers at Riviera Hall Lutheran School in Redondo Beach donated seven to 10 inches of hair each during its “Locks of Love” event on June 5.

The hair went to a national foundation that makes wigs from human hair to give to children with medical issues.

As the first event of its kind at Riviera Hall Lutheran, the cutting was scheduled for 7:30 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. on the playground but lasted until 12:30 p.m.

“One person cutting, and I was frantically calling parents for permission,” said Whitney Morris, head of community service for the school’s parent-volunteer organization.

The occasion was inspired by Morris’ two young daughters asking what they could do to help their uncle diagnosed with alopecia.

Morris organized the event with Lisa Rosini, owner of Bardot Salon in Manhattan Beach, and a mother of a student at Riviera Hall. Afterward, Morris sent off 50 ponytails — the required packaging by Locks of Love — by UPS to West Palm Beach, Fla. Riviera Lutheran serves grades one through eight. ER
