Dressed to the nines
Last fall it was Macbeth, not it’s Millie. Redondo Union High School presents the musical “Thoroughly Modern Millie,” directed by Justin Baldridge, this weekend and next in the RUHS Auditorium, 631 Vincent Park, Redondo Beach. Doctor Frankenstein, meet Igor!
The Mel Brooks musical “Young Frankenstein,” directed by Seth Cohen, is being performed in the Peninsula High School Performing Arts Center, 27118 Silver Spur Road, top of the hill in Rolling Hills Estates. The Stark naked truth
Award-winning vocalist Nathan Stark, accompanied by Henri Venanzi on piano, performs at 8 p.m. in Marsee Auditorium at El Camino College, Crenshaw and Redondo Beach boulevards, Torrance. The program focuses on Ibert’s “Quatre Chansons de Quichotte,” a new song cycle by Scott Grendel entitled “What We Did Not Know,” and includes songs and arias by Handel, Rossini, and Verdi, plus a dash of Broadway classics. Ego Fine Art presents “When the Cat’s Away,” a group show that features Emily Brantley, Michael Chomick, Angelina D’Arcy, Ken Farkash, Jim Fisher, Sherry Frost, Kyle William Harper, David Harris, Heather Ireland, Vicki Mack, Gavin McGroggan, Jacqueline May, Donald Rock, Julia Strickler, Alisa Shtykar, Jake Tedesco, Scott Trimble, and Miguelangelo. “O’Lucky You” is another of Bonnie Barchichat’s Senior Comedy Afternoons, and this one has an Irish twist because, well, you know, and it’s taking place at the Los Verdes Golf Club, 7000 W. The Palos Verdes Symphonic Band, under the direction of David Stanton, presents “An Afternoon at the (Light) Opera,” taking place at 3 p.m. at St. Peter’s by the Sea Presbyterian Church, 6410 Palos Verdes Dr. South, Rancho Palos Verdes. Featured vocalists borrowed from LA Opera include soprano Lisa Eden, mezzo Sara Campbell, tenor Ashley Faatoalia, and bass-baritone Ryan Reithmeier. Petals in the garden
The fourth annual “Cherry Blossom Cultural Festival” takes place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the east side of Columbia Park, 4045 190th St., Torrance, near 190t and Prairie. It’s free. As is traditional in Japan, we are invited to bring blankets to sit under the blossoms and picnic. The park has over 110 cherry blossom trees donated by Soka Gakkai International.
