American Hero Quilts will be presented to about a dozen members of the Vietnam Veterans of America South Bay Chapter 53 at noon on Tuesday, at Polliwog Park in Manhattan Beach.
American Hero Quilts are made by an estimated 800 volunteers from around the United States. The quilters were organized in 2004 by Sue Nebeker, of Washington, who began making quilts for U.S. Afghanistan veterans recovering at Washington’s Madigan Hospital. Since then, over 30,000 quilts have been donated to American vets in military hospitals in Afghanistan and the U.S.
Among those is Lt. Colonel Daniel Massey, who received an American Hero Quilt while recovering at Madigan Hospital from injuries incurred in Iraq in 2009.
This past January, Massey showed his quilt to members of the VVA South Bay Chapter 53.
Nebeker, upon learning of how appreciative members of the VVA South Bay were of her work, offered to send them quilts as a belated welcome home present.

VVA SB 53 announces high school grad scholarships
The Vietnam Veteran’s of American South Bay Chapter 53 is now accepting applications for its annual, $1,000 academic scholarships.
The scholarship program was established in 1995 to help graduating high school students who plan to attend college or technical school.
Applicants must submit an essay on a Vietnam era veteran, defined as any veteran who served in the Republic of Vietnam between February 28, 1961
and May 7, 1975; or 2. in any duty location between August 5, 1964 and May 7, 1975.
Entries must be received by April 18, 2021.
